Best of CASE District I Award

Institution: Dartmouth College

Title of entry: Short Talks on Big Ideas: Slavery's Afterlife

About this entry: At the start of the pandemic, the Lifelong Learning team answered the call to keep the Dartmouth community connected to each other and the College. We expanded our online offerings by inviting alumni to “go back to class” with our expert faculty. “Short Talks on Big Ideas” features short videos with engaging and accessible educational content that gives alumni the opportunity to learn about Dartmouth faculty’s groundbreaking research, new methods of teaching, and the ways our teacher-scholars are changing the world. Six faculty members from diverse disciplines were selected to participate in season one with topics as far-ranging as anthropology, computer science, art history, earth science and political science.

One of these videos, “Slavery’s Afterlife,” features Associate Professor Kimberly Juanita Brown as she examines our culture’s perception of Black bodies, imminent death, and the ways these images cause collective suffering. Fascinating research in its own right, the topic of racial justice is also timely and a priority for Dartmouth College, so featuring this video was a way of further educating our alumni base about anti-racism.

“Slavery’s Afterlife” highlights Brown’s current and upcoming research and her teaching methods at Dartmouth. Additional resources are available on the webpage so the viewer can take a deeper dive into the subject matter. To date, it is one of the most watched videos with 66,557 views. Members of the alumni community have reached out to Alumni Relations to share how the video has impacted them and the importance of providing educational content on racial justice.
