Title of entry: A new era for The Ridges
About this entry: Its 700-plus acres of land and historic buildings have towered above Ohio University’s main campus and the greater community since the 1870s—first as a state-owned mental health center, constructed in the architecturally-significant Kirkbride design, and today as The Ridges.
In March 2020, Ohio University completed a history-making renovation at The Ridges, marking the first time a university had repurposed an entire wing of a Kirkbride facility for its academic mission. The time was right to tell the story of how Ohio University, since taking full ownership of the property in 1993, has been repurposing elements of one of the most well-known and largest historical sites in the region to preserve its historic character while building a future that serves campus and community.
We developed and executed a multimedia content plan that provided the most comprehensive look to date at the past, present and future of The Ridges and demonstrated how the University has and continues to make strategic investments in this property while balancing programmatic needs and financial resources.
Given the breadth and depth of this story, we paired written and visual narratives that would resonate with our primary audience of alumni and friends of the University as well as students, employees, the local community, government stakeholders who entrusted OHIO to be stewards of this historic property, and potential future developers. The results? An interactive experience for reader, a resource for the Ohio University community – and the most well-read Ohio Today content in the past five years.
