Title of entry: Listen Carefully

About this entry: The speech from our fall valedictorian at Lethbridge College brought tears to the eyes of everyone listening, whether in person or online. Kyla Hornberger, who earned a 4.0 grade point average and graduated with Honours with Great Distinction from the Interior Design Technology program, describes herself as “a mother to five glorious humans, a believer, a dreamer, a creator, a doubter, someone who is Deaf, someone who is hearing (thanks to technology),” and so much more. Our Wider Horizons team knew we wanted to share that inspiring story, and we sought a creative way to do that.

We ended up connecting with an illustrator who is relatively new to our city, and asked her to create an illustrated story of Kyla's speech. The response to this piece has been phenomenal. We were able to repacked it and run it on the magazine's website and as an Instagram story as well. We are just in the midst of our annual alumni reader survey, so don't have specific feedback on it yet, but anecdotally the story has resonated with many readers. We are proud to submit it for this award.
