Title of entry: Advancing Health Equity for South Carolina and Beyond
About this entry: Following the death of George Floyd, the MUSC Office of Institutional Advancement in July 2020 created a DEI Taskforce charged with increasing philanthropy for health equity initiatives, scholarships, research and fellowships, as well as diversifying our boards across the enterprise. This group also engaged faculty, leadership and the DEI Office to create innovative funding opportunities informed by MUSC's strategic plan and incorporated "big idea" initiatives to move the needle for systems change and racial equity.
In September 2021, MUSC was contacted by Associated Press philanthropy reporter Haleluya Hadero, who was writing an article about the equity movement and racial equity-related fundraising. She referenced a Candid.org report, which identified MUSC as South Carolina’s top public recipient of equity-in-health philanthropy.
Since then, we have continued to build momentum, securing over $7.4 million in DEI-focused funding since the formation of our taskforce, including:
• $1 million+ for Underrepresented Minority (URM) scholarships;
• $1.02 million for a new dentistry fellowship to address oral health disparities in underserved areas;
• $1.35 million to train, recruit and retain racially concordant APPs for MUSC's new medical center in rural Williamsburg County and bolster telehealth-enabled culturally-appropriate care;
• $500,000+ to increase behavioral health resources for patients suffering from sickle cell disease; and
• significant funding for the future development of a Cancer Health Equity and Engagement Center.
Prompted by this success, MUSC’s chief equity officer sent us a message stating, “I have NEVER felt such support and expertise from Institutional Advancement in my 14 years at MUSC!”
