Title of entry: NC State alumni magazine

About this entry: The design of NC State magazine reflects the values and spirit of our institution: Open, accessible, and sophisticated but friendly. We believe in a clean design that offers readers multiple entry points for stories. We break up our robust news section with a mix of shorter and longer stories, and we use silos, like "Artifact," to add variety. Our features each get their own individual treatment, while staying within the boundaries of our overall design.
One of the things that's made us successful has been the fact that we take art and design into consideration with every decision we make. Our art director says, "I make decisions for imagery based on the content and tone of the story. I try to figure out if a story would best be told with photography (photo journalistically, artistically or literally), graphics (with infographics or typographically) or illustration (conceptually, stylistically or literally). The goal is to capture the readers’ attention, keep it and lead them through the pages." The issues submitted here, Winter 2020 and Spring 2021, exemplify this approach.
