Title of entry: Behind the Cover

About this entry: To showcase the creative intention behind the Berea College Magazine Summer 2022 cover image, the multimedia team filmed a short promotional interview with the editor and behind-the-scenes footage of the cover shoot. The theme of this issue was a continuation of the “Value of Free” campaign, illustrating the value of a tuition-free education. Taking inspiration from her son’s “slight obsession” with the Beatles, the team recreated the iconic Abbey Road album cover with students at a crosswalk in the heart of Berea’s campus. The cover aimed to represent a progression from graduation to various career paths.

The video was used to promote the upcoming issue and show not only the intention behind the cover but to give viewers a look into the process of capturing the cover image. The models and photography crew had precisely 17 seconds to rush out into the road, place lights and get into position to capture the perfect shot. With the rest of the magazine content, this promotion helped raise more than $729,000 in gifts to the College.
