Best of CASE District III Award
Institution: University of Florida
Title of entry: Field Tested
About this entry: Through words, videos, photos, audio and social media, Field Tested tells the story of a Indigenous scientist — the survivor of a near-fatal accident — as she dismantles barriers that force disabled students and others out of Earth science careers.
Writer Alisson Clark, photographer/videographer Brianne Lehan and social media specialist Phillip Frohm told this story to shine a light on the problems with field camp, a time-honored ritual for geoscience majors that, in its traditional form, limits the diversity of voices in Earth science, especially students with disabilities. Twenty percent of undergrads in the U.S. identify as disabled. When talented students are shut out of these careers, they can't tackle issues that affect all of us, like clean water, climate change, energy and sustainable agriculture. We hope to inspire other institutions to use the fully accessible field camp showcased in the story as a model for inclusive science education.
