Title of entry: Gold & Blue Magazine Fall 2022

About this entry: Gold and Blue is St. Mary’s University school’s magazine, designed and produced twice yearly. In our Fall 2022 cover, we developed a concept based on our school’s commitment to Pope Francis’s seven-year journey toward integral ecology.

The idea was to have a stack of seven books with green covers and an open book at the top of the pile with a tiny sprout growing out of the soil to represent how education in those seven areas will transform our school and help fulfill our commitment to Pope Francis toward integral ecology.

We started the concept with a sketch. Once we had the sketch, we started thinking about how we could bring that sketch to life. We got some books from the dollar store and spray-painted the covers of the seven books. Once the books were painted, we went to a home improvement retail store and got some potting soil and a plant to prepare for the photo shoot. We did a photoshoot, selected the images we thought would work for the cover, and began designing it on the computer. The selected typeface is meant to show an organic feel, just like the small detail on the ampersand symbol, representing how the university is committed to the goal of going green in every way. The magazine issue was the kick-off of the campus effort that has continued this year with meetings and events to create a plan of action.
