About this entry: Published twice a year, UMSL Magazine is a general interest, externally facing publication from the University of Missouri–St. Louis that empowers the university’s unique student body and alumni base by showcasing stories of excellence to a circulation of 112,055. Though every issue produced is unique, certain design elements, sensibility, personality and layout structure create a cohesive “UMSL Magazine” look that helps demonstrate the diverse successes of UMSL students, faculty, alumni and community partners.
The goal is for UMSL Magazine to help build and maintain connections between the university and various stakeholders, and the magazine’s design helps create that connection. The magazine’s design is inspired by UMSL’s community of people, and the designers are mindful to seek inspiration from the stories’ subjects when making aesthetic decisions.
Certain sections of the magazine have consistent design elements that help tie the issues together – the quick-hit On Campus and the Class Notes, for example, feature short stories and QR codes. Those are balanced against the features, which have ambitious and creative design and reporting.
