Best of CASE District VIII Award
Institution: Lethbridge College
Title of entry: Wider Horizons
About this entry: We are proud to submit our spring 22 and winter 22-23 issues of Wider Horizons for consideration. The spring issue - anchored by our 26-page "Never Enough Nature" special section - was more than a year in the making and ended up being the most successful issue in the magazine's 16-year history (we printed extra copies and still ran out on campus and in the community).
What truly distinguishes this issue and story is the involvement of Dr. Ninna Piiksii (Mike Bruised Head/Chief Bird), a fluent Blackfoot speaker and a spiritual leader for sacred societies whose research focuses on restoring the Blackfoot names of the mountains, valleys, trails and waterways in Paahtómahksikimi and across traditional Blackfoot territory. We also included additional content online and repurposed the content for six weeks of great summer social media content.
In addition to this special story, both issues stand out for excellent storytelling, use of great images, and creative approaches to what could be less-interesting stories, and both reflect the diverse and inspiring people connected to Lethbridge College. All of this was accomplished with a small staff and small budget - and resulted in great feedback on our alumni survey and in messages from the community. Thank you for considering them for a CASE Circle of Excellence Award.
