Title of entry: Lakeside magazine
About this entry: The two issues of Lakeside magazine published during 2022 carried some extra weight: an introduction of the first new head of our school in 23 years and a subtle argument for the powerful kinds of learning that can take place outside of the traditional classroom -- an increasing focus here that has excited and concerned different parts of our community. In a sense, both of the issues — through those cover stories and other content — explored the value of the school's mission and ongoing work against a background of profound change: change in leadership, changes in educational trends, the many changes and uncertainties brought about by the COVID pandemic. Lakeside is an extraordinary 5-12 independent day school. I'd like to think that these issues of its alumni magazine reminded and reassured alumni and current families that the educational experience here is still special, despite the challenges of this time. And that the many variations of "alumni stories" paint a picture of a diverse, wide-ranging, empathetic, and interesting group of people who define success on their own terms and who are making a positive differerence in their corners of the world. While difficult to measure direct impact, both issues generated positive letters to the editor. The alumni and community welcome events for our new head of school were enthusiastically well attended. Philanthropy and enrollment numbers remain consistently high. The mood at the school feels buoyant. These issues reflect — and have contributed to — a new, exciting, forward-looking era.
