Title of entry: Cover Harvard Law Bulletin Spring 2023

About this entry: The cover of the Spring 2023 issue features an elegantly executed line drawing of several animals, from an octopus to a chicken. They are the protagonists in the feature story which focuses on a Harvard Law program that uses the legal system to improve the treatment of animals—in captivity and in the wild. Our designer chose the illustrator because of previous animal drawings he had done as well as his overall style of line drawing. He wanted the illustration to have a kind of scientific anatomy sensibility and wanted an octopus to be the main focus because of its unusual shape and form. He felt it would be sure to draw attention and engage readers. The illustrator came up with the background color and the use of pink as a highlight, as well as adding the other animals. The designer wanted the type to be relatively straightforward so that it would stand out from the rich texture and form of the animals.
