Description

Best of CASE District I Award

Institution: Boston University

Title of entry: Racism, Sexism, and the Crisis of Black Women’s Health

About this entry: For three decades, Boston University has led the largest and longest-running study of Black women’s health in the United States. This article from BU’s research news site, The Brink, tells the story of the women who’ve helped drive the study forward, from the participants who’ve given up their time and knowledge to the researchers making sense of the data and using it to enact change. The article was also the Fall 2023 cover story for BU’s alumni magazine, Bostonia. Although the article gained national media attention, some of the article’s impact can also be measured in reader comments, many from participants in the study sharing their reasons for taking part—and thanks for our coverage. A small sample: “I was so pleased to see this substantive article on black women’s health….It is important for Boston University not to lose its traditional social justice involvement in the black community;” “I’m very pleased to know the information I share with BWHS is helping other women as well….Thank you for your dedication and communication, much appreciated;” and “The findings listed in this article have only further inspired me to catalyze social change for black women in the healthcare industry.” When posted on social media, the story had more than 250 engagements and a post reach of 203K. Four months after its publication, the story continues to attract hundreds of readers every day, the majority from beyond the BU community.
