Title of entry: Workshops with a Purpose: Transforming Survey Insights into Actionable Ideas
About this entry: So often in the Advancement space we hear about the need for data-based evidence and data-driven decisions. And there are plenty of industry examples touting the vast data being collected, how it’s being captured, or what changes it may have propelled. Even when provided with incredibly compelling data, our Advancement teams often do not have the bandwidth or tools to translate that data into ideas, decisions, or deliverables. We rarely see a solution that serves as a bridge from this data that everyone believes is essential to the informed decisions everyone desires. Recognizing these barriers, the Dartmouth Advancement Market Research team developed a mechanism to kickstart insights into action, facilitating two high-energy, interactive workshops of cross-Advancement staff. Armed with a tailored pre-workshop reading of in-depth insights from our expansive “Why” of Alumni Engagement Survey, workshop invitees participated in interactive exercises and technology-enabled discussions that applied a formulaic, scaffolded approach designed to elicit thoughtful contribution and innovative, blue-sky idea generation. The outcome: the groups generated and vetted nearly 30 ideas with the potential to foster greater alumni connection and solve for issues of alumni having limited time for engagement. Our workshop series became the bridge by which staff could collaborate across teams to transform data into meaningful action.
