Title of entry: Kummer Institute Annual Report
About this entry: In 2020, Missouri S&T received a record-breaking gift of $300 million from the late June and Fred Kummer, a Missouri S&T graduate. To convey the continuing impact of the gift, the university publishes an annual report to showcase how the vision behind the gift is being brought to life. Using a design that prioritizes accomplishments, the report organizes content about how S&T is investing the gift based on the gift’s three pillars: elevate S&T, local and regional economic impact, and STEM outreach, with an emphasis on underserved communities.
To create content that conveyed the three pillars as separate entities while also telling the story of the interplay among them, S&T’s marketing and communications team established a team of writers, designers, photographers, faculty, researchers and academic leaders to produce a printed report true to the vision that inspired the gift. Among other topics, the report highlights student research and the work of research centers established by the gift, in-depth profiles of non-traditional and first-generation scholarship recipients, opportunities created to help students become entrepreneurial leaders, capital projects on the S&T campus made possible by the gift and S&T’s work to help small Missouri businesses remain globally competitive. The report was distributed at the third annual celebration of the gift, known at S&T as Kummer Day, and was shared with members of the board that oversees the Kummer Institute and was distributed personally across the state and region to those ready to help Missouri become a globally recognized center of entrepreneurship and innovation.
