Title of entry: Beyond the Bench

About this entry: Beyond the Bench is The University of Kansas Cancer Center’s annual research report. This publication serves as a tool to disseminate our latest cancer research efforts in a succinct, reader-friendly and visually appealing manner.

The Beyond the Bench annual report was developed to highlight the cancer center’s research efforts to reduce morbidity and mortality in our catchment area, which includes Kansas and the western half of Missouri. This publication serves as a touchpoint for our entire catchment area, particularly those falling outside the Kansas City metro. Our primary target audience is donors/potential donors. Secondary target audience includes legislators, business/civic leaders, External Advisory Board members and NCI directors.

In 2022, KU Cancer Center achieved comprehensive designation from the National Cancer Institute (NCI). This is the highest honor bestowed by the NCI. Centers with NCI designation have gone through a rigorous evaluation process that includes assessment of scientific leadership, resources and depth of research in basic, clinical and population science. With this edition of Beyond the Bench, we aimed to:
• Celebrate and elucidate NCI comprehensive designation,
• Demonstrate thought leadership,
• Communicate the latest and most groundbreaking basic and clinical research efforts taking place at the cancer center,
• Emphasize the diversity of research efforts by ensuring each research program is covered,
• Recognize employees for leadership transitions and awards
• Summarize investigator-initiated clinical trials, high-impact publications and major grants received, and
• Highlight a sampling of education/awareness/health equity-focused activities we participate in across our communities.
