Title of entry: Inclusive Excellence in Research and Creativity: Diversifying Ornithology

About this entry: ODI approached UComm with a video content request for their 2023 State of Diversity event. This was a live event but would include several videos shown to an audience to highlight inclusive excellence being done across the university. One of the video requests was a feature on Dr. Dai Shizuka and his work to make ornithology more inclusive.

The natural locations and the obvious dedication of Dr. Shizuka to his students lent themselves perfectly to visual storytelling. We knew we needed to physically go where they went and see what they saw. The video involved an on-location interview with Dr. Shizuka as well as several additional shoots to collect b-roll. The end result is an engrossing video that connects his work as an ornithologist with his inclusivity efforts.

The video was featured during UNL’s State of Diversity event and received positive feedback from attendees. It was shared widely on social media from the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and UNL’s School of Biological Sciences.
