Title of entry: The Next 100 Years

About this entry: It has truly been 100 years of amazing, transformative impact since the UCLA College was founded, and our second century promises to be even more impactful than the first.

To celebrate the wonderful crossroads at which the UCLA College stands, we created a feature called "The Next 100 Years" which features the academic deans and professors from across the institution sharing their first-person hopes, predictions and wisdom as they look to the future. Tying it all together are illustrations that one staff member created on their own, summing up each of the five deans' visions for the future of each division: humanities, life sciences, physical sciences, social sciences and undergraduate education.

Each illustration features clever details and metaphoric imagery that summarize and elevate each dean's view of the present and future impact of their division, lending subtle branding to each section to align with each dean's headshot and testimonials. All of these disparate art elements come together beautifully in one cover image that reflects the shared power and promise of the UCLA College and its diverse disciplines and community.

Also, the complexity of the multiple layers and art elements of the illustrations lent themselves well when we needed to convert the artwork into additional assets. These included an intriguing header banner on our homepage, engaging social media posts and an animated Instagram reel that gave life to the various elements as they floated amongst the lighted thread. These illustrations helped this feature and issue travel a very long way indeed.
