Best of CASE District VIII Award
Institution: The University of British Columbia
Title of entry: Daniel Family Foundation – Impact Story
About this entry: Creating solutions for the future of our planet is embedded in every aspect of life at the University of British Columbia (UBC)—from research and teaching to campus operations and community outreach.
Since 2016, the Daniel Family Foundation has supported UBC student engineering design teams—especially those focused on clean energy and sustainability—helping them gain vital hands-on and team-based learning. The Daniels are carrying that vision forward with renewed support for UBC Okanagan's Next Generation Battery Research & Training Centre and UBC Vancouver's Smart Hydrogen Energy District (SHED).
As part of promotional work for the Daniel Family Foundation's philanthropy and its support of UBC's clean energy and sustainability goals, we created an online impact story and a podcast—which included interviews with:
• Patrick Daniel and his son Paul Daniel, donors and both UBC engineering alumni
• Dr. Walter Mérida, principal researcher, Smart Hydrogen Energy District (SHED) at UBC Vancouver
• Dr. Jian Liu, principal researcher, Advanced Materials for Energy Storage Lab at UBC Okanagan
The audience for the story and podcast was:
• Our strong alumni network (almost 400,000 alums worldwide)
• Existing donors who will be inclined to give again
• Internal UBC audience, including faculty, staff and students
