Title of entry: Dean's Engineering Brochure 2023

About this entry: Every year, we create a brochure highlighting the notable people and projects coming out of University of Portland’s Shiley School of Engineering. For our 2023 brochure, we wanted to introduce our brand-new 45,000-square-foot LEED-Gold Certified Shiley-Marcos Center for Design & Innovation opening later that year. It’s a building dedicated to providing space and equipment for students across disciplines to collaborate, research, design, experiment and invent innovative solutions to the challenges facing the world today.

To reflect the building’s purpose and position within our UP community, we designed our brochure with innovation and collaboration in mind. Our goal was to make an impact on prospective students, industry partners, and deans of other engineering schools. The challenge is how to do it on a tight budget. We specifically chose raised spot UV treatment on the cover as an inexpensive way to create an inviting, tactile effect; applied triangles as symbolic design elements on the cover and throughout the book; positioned the new building as a dramatic and eye-catching center spread; and employed white space to lend a spacious, clean, modern tone that aligns with the aspirations of the building.
