Title of entry: Our Languages, our voices, in our own words
About this entry: The Diversity and Inclusion team within the Faculty of Arts at The University of Melbourne approached the Video and Media team to create a promotional video based on their report on staff multilingualism.
The report itself aimed to gain a greater understanding of the number of languages spoken by staff at the University and their perspective on a multilingual campus.
In collaboration, the two teams agreed that the strategic goal for the video was to showcase the linguistic diversity of the University campus and make multilingualism more visible, while also highlighting how important a person’s language and culture is to their sense of belonging and identity.
The video was to feature a diversity of ethnicities and languages, as well as Indigenous Australians and speakers who had learnt second languages. It was super important to create an emotional impact for viewers around what a person’s language means to their identity and belonging.
The video team captured twelve short interviews with linguistically diverse University staff in our studio, featuring the campus locations in the backdrops to place the interviewees as a part of campus life.
The primary audience for this video is present and future University of Melbourne staff, with a secondary audience of students.
The report and video were both released in early November and immediately gained numerous positive notifications from the primary staff audience. It is currently being edited for a second campaign to ensure it reaches a greater audience.
