Title of entry: Welsh Language student recruitment video at the University of Cambridge
About this entry: In an effort to attract more Welsh-speaking students to the University of Cambridge, we made a film entirely in Welsh featuring two students and a supervisor. As far as we are aware, we are the only England-based university to make full-length videos in the Welsh Language.
We consider Welsh students to be an under-represented demographic at the University compared to other areas of the UK. Unfortunately since COVID, the number and success rate of Welsh state-educated applicants to Cambridge has fallen. The Cambridge Colleges of Churchill and Magdalene focus on outreach to students based in Wales and are continuing to collaborate with the Welsh Government's Seren Network to help increase applications.
The film was made for audiences on social media and for use by schools liaison officers (SLOs) for Churchill College and Magdalene College. These SLOs have embedded the videos in to websites, emails and used them at in-person events such as the Seren Network launch events in Bangor, Llandudno and Wrexham.
Separately, we used the section of the film related to the Cambridge interview on our social media channels to reassure English-as-a-second-language students who might be attending the interview in December.
