Title of entry: State of the Press
About this entry: “State of the Press” is a feature focused on the media, print media especially, at a time of crossroads. In speaking to a wide swath of Connecticut College alums who are part of or interact with political media at various levels and have done so for a wide range of times, it attempts to get an understanding of the current challenges of media, especially in regarding to covering an election, and the ways in which the industry seems ready—or not—to meet those challenges.
The goal of the piece was to consider the media not simply through the prism of what they produce, but everything that’s happening until their work reaches the page. It also attempted to illuminate the ways in which media has changed that the average person might have no idea about. While it was not intended to be an optimistic or pessimistic piece, in the execution, it well captures an important aspect of American life in a very precarious position. Nonetheless, it also demonstrates the passions and thoughtfulness of those who have made journalism their lifetime pursuit.
