Title of entry: Student history project raises new voices
About this entry: UND Today set out to showcase a project highlighting the hidden history of our city's first 150 years by examining the voices of everyday people as opposed to what's written in the usual history books. This was a story not only for our campus audience but also for the Greater Grand Forks community.
From start to finish, historians William Caraher and Nikki Berg Burin would guide their 14 undergraduate students to research, write, workshop, edit and publish essays that would be turned into a book and made available to the public. Each of the 150 essays was 150 words long and explored life in the early days of Grand Forks.
The UND Today writer spoke at length with the historians and students to create a compelling narrative that would both celebrate discovery and reveal little-known history to our readers.
