Title of entry: A Cultural Connection

About this entry: ‘Cultural Connections’ tells the story of Raneem Kobeissy, a Lebanese student at UND, who uncovered a link to the Boutrous family while exploring the university's history. She discovered that Sylvia Boutrous, UND’s first female Lebanese graduate, shared both her major and her heritage. This narrative honors the Boutrous family’s lasting contributions to UND and their enduring impact on students like Raneem.

This story idea emerged from UND’s Hilyard Center, as we worked to market their inaugural event, 'Empowered by our Past,' to alumni. Upon learning about Raneem’s discovery, this story became a top priority.

Our goal with this piece was to celebrate a unique cultural history at UND, highlight some important moments, and inspire readers – especially women – to walk through the doors that offer a threshold for a new life.
