Title of entry: STANFORD Magazine (March and September issues)
About this entry: In just five print issues per year, STANFORD magazine brings the wealth of student voices, alumni experiences, academic research, historical interest and a multitude of interesting ideas to the homes of its 230,000+ alumni. That means that there are five opportunities to stand out in mailboxes and on coffee tables, and to engage for the casual flip while drawing in readers to engage with the deeper storytelling. Art and design plays a huge role in all of these moments. The May and September issues exemplify a strong use of cover and feature story design, smaller stories that are easy to scan and art-forward, and playful illustrations for our popular advice stories such as "How to Be a Morning Person" engage audiences of all ages. We do broad surveys of our readers every 3-5 years and this latest included comments which speak to the design format and structure such as "Great layout" and "Appealing format and style. Easy to read even if a few/tens of minutes at a time." Other readers remarked about the design sensibility with comments like "Covers are appealing," "Love the aesthetic." Some readers remarked with thoughts such as "Intriguing topics on the cover" "Authentic" "showing the humanness of teachers, researchers and students". Still others applauded the visual execution of the magazine with remarks like "Beautiful graphic design" "Glossy thick pages," "Good paper stock," "Good production quality," "Super nice imagery and drawings--a collectible" "Graphics are lovely and well done" and "Great covers, I'm always intrigued."
